California soldier killed in Afghanistan

A soldier from Greenfield, Calif. was killed Sunday in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced today.

Spc. Javier Sanchez, Jr., 28, was on a mounted patrol with his unit in Sar Rowzah when they were attacked by an improvised explosive device.

Sanchez was stationed at Fort Drum, New York, and was assigned to Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.

Greenfield is in Monterey County about an hour and a half south of San Jose.
