About 70 percent of Americans have a friend who has identified himself or herself as gay on Facebook, according to a Wall Street Journal blog posted Tuesday.

Author Geoffrey A. Fowler warns that not everyone is on Facebook and that even those Facebook friends might not exactly be close relationships.

Still, he writes, “it’s a notable statistic, because gay-rights groups say some of their recent successes at the ballot — after years of losing there — can be tied with a kind of tipping point Americans have reached in being comfortable with gay and lesbian friends and family.”

The blog follows a recent Pew Research Poll that says 87 percent of Americans know someone who is gay or lesbian (up from 61 percent in 1993).

About half of Americans (49%) say a close family member or one of their closest friends is gay or lesbian, the survey found.

The blog was posted just hours before the Supreme Court will speak on Prop 8 and Defense of Marriage Act.

That is expected at 7 a.m. PT on Wednesday. We will have complete coverage at www.mydesert.com/Prop8 so you know the moment the decision is released.
