PGA West to host Web.com Tour qualifying

June 25th, 2013 | by Larry Bohannan | Comments

Last December was the end of the PGA Tour qualifying process, or Q-school, we have known it for years and year. There would be no more PGA Tour exemptions handed out in a Q-school.

And that last tournament was played at PGA West in La Quinta, which held the event on alternate years for years.

But the end of the PGA Tour Q-school doesn’t mean the end of qualifying for the Web.com Tour, the feeder tour for the PGA Tour now. That qualifying tournament, under basically the same format of the old PGA Tour Q-school, will again be played in December. And it will again be played at PGA West.

Web.Com Tour qualifying finals will be Dec. 12-17, meaning the event will still feature six rounds. But there will be some differences. Each of the approximate 144 players who will make the finals will have access to the Web.com Tour for 2014, based on their finish in the event.

The process will included pre-qualifying, including one event at the Norman Course at PGA West Sept. 11-13. That will be followed by first-stage and second-stage events, just as was true under the old Q-school format. A second-stage event will be held Nov. 19-22 at Murrieta.

Pre-qualifiers are for players with no real status on any tour around the world, while the some exemptions into the first and second stages will be handed out to players with some status on some tours, including the PGA Tour, world rankings, PGA national club professionals, Walker Cups, U.S. Amatuer and other various status.

“The Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament is one more signal of the PGA Tour’s commitment to the Web.com Tour, and further elevates the Tour as the path to the PGA Tour,” said Web.com Tour president Bill Calfee in a statement announcing the .  “With its similar format and the hundreds of participants who will enter, the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament will provide lots of drama, storylines and, unfortunately for some, the heartbreak and disappointment we’ve come to expect year-in and year-out at ‘Q-School’”.

Anyone interested in entering the various stages of the q-school process can go to the Web.com Tour home page on PGATour.com, go to the tournaments section, then scroll down to “online application” in the right-hand column. Deadline to enter is pre-qualifying is Aug. 7, and the deadline for first- second- and finals-stage events is Sept. 18.
