The results of Day One are in. Nearly 200 couples received marriage licenses in Riverside County on Monday, the first day since 2008 that licenses were granted to same-sex couples.
The exact count of 192 licenses countywide and 90 at the county’s Administrative Center in Indio are for all couples, gay and straight, since the county isn’t keeping separate counts. But Michele Martinez-Barrera of the county’s Office of Assessor-Clerk-Recorder, who provided the numbers, said “a good majority” were same-sex couples.
Ceremonies were performed for 59 couples in Indio and 82 countywide, Martinez-Barrera said. Again, those counts are for all couples.
The county was able to accommodate all couples who requested a marriage ceremony, Martinez-Barrera said.
“Overall, it was very exciting and vibrant and an overall positive feel for the office,” she said.
