James Hayes Perree and Timothy Perree Hayes were married Monday, July 1, 2013, the first day same-sex weddings resumed in California.
James and Timothy had planned a ceremony in 2008. It fell two weeks after Proposition 8 passed, preventing them from getting legally married. A few years ago, during speculation the stay preventing same-sex marriages might be lifted, they planned to get married at the courthouse. They were forced to cancel their plans after an appeals court kept the stay in place.
The newlyweds finally got the opportunity to exchange vows this week. It “feels wonderful to have our loving bond recognized legally,” James wrote in an email.
After more than five years together, James says he and his husband are still very much in love.
