Palm Springs area fire impact: Silver Fire closures

The Silver Fire burning near Banning is sending smoke into the Coachella Valley, prompting some closures and cancellations.

CLOSED: Pacific Crest Trail, 22 miles near Snow Creek
A 22-mile section of the cross-country hiking trail that runs close to the evacuated community of Snow Creek is closed, from the Mount San Jacinto State Park boundary to Interstate 10 near Cabazon, according to the Pacific Crest Trail Association on Friday.

CLOSED: John H. Furbee Aquatics Center, Desert Hot Springs
The pool is closed because of falling ash, the Desert Recreation District said Thursday. A dive-in movie set for Friday will be rescheduled after the pool reopens.

CANCELED: Palm Springs Unified School District activities
The school district announced Thursday it was canceling high schools’ afternoon practices and the ASES after-school program at the eight year-round elementary schools that are in session.

OPEN: Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
The tramway and Long Valley, including the Desert View Trail and self-guided nature walk, are open, tram spokeswoman Lena Smith said. “State Parks back country (Round Valley, Hidden Divide area, etc) are closed,” she said. The tramway is set to close for maintenance beginning Saturday.

OPEN: VillageFest, Palm Springs
Setup for the weekly street fair went on as normal Thursday. VillageFest summer hours are 7 to 10 p.m.
