Rep. Raul Ruiz on Wednesday is kicking off a four-part town hall series meant to highlight veterans’ issues, including access to health care.
Ruiz will be at the Palm Springs’ American Legion Hall Post 519 at 1 p.m. Wednesday for the first such forum.
Similar events are planned in Beaumont, Indio and Hemet in coming weeks, when House members have a recess from votes in Washington.
“These are men and women who risk their lives for our safety,” Ruiz told The Desert Sun today. “We live in a very veteran-dense community. We honor and respect our veterans. That should also translate into action and into solutions.”
Ruiz, a Palm Desert Democrat and emergency room physician, said he did much of his medical training in VA hospitals. And he’s taken a keen interest in veterans’ affairs in his freshman term, including serving on the House committee with that jurisdiction.
It was recently the focus of a legislative mailer that was sent to residents across the district.
Two of the three bills he’s sponsored also deal with veterans’ issues. One would improve video conference access to the Board of Veterans’ appeals and another addresses the backlog at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
