Last month I wrote a story about local club pro Tracy Lane, who was entering hospice care for terminal Stage 4 cervical cancer. The story was about how she and her husband, Derek, the director of golf at The Quarry at La Quinta, had decided to go public with their desire to use Tracy’s story as a way to raise funds for cancer research and to educate others about how cervical cancer is not just treatable but preventable.
Here is a link to that story.
For those who became interested in Tracy’s story and who wanted to help the foundation in some way, the news is that Tracy Lane, 31, passed away on Aug. 11. In discussing his wife’s death on a caringbridge.org journal page, Derek Lane said:
“I have never been so proud of an individual battle in all of my life. For 11 months, she battled everything conceivable and never questioned the cruelty, instead simply rolling up her sleeves and giving it everything she had while never losing dignity or grace. Being able to have nine years with her as my soul mate will always be the greatest gift ever given to me. I will always carry with me the lessons taught and most importantly, her ability to love unconditionally. Thank you Tracy Lane, for allowing me a seat next to you and for giving me your heart…I will cherish it forever and promise to champion your cause until we beat this unforgiving disease. WE will make a difference.”
