Ten lucky winners guessed Oct. 9 as the correct day for the season’s first snowfall atop Mount San Jacinto in the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway’s annual snow-guessing contest.

Nine of the winners — who will receive four tram passes each and a gift bag with memorabilia from the tram’s 50th anniversary — were from the Coachella Valley. The 10th correct guess came from David Butts of Anchorage, Alaska.

Other winners were: Linda Dinko and Evy Laforce of Cathedral City, Jane Moore and Diane Lakata of Palm Desert, Renee Breiling, Carol Zachik, Shelly Erdman and Hilary Harrington of Palm Springs and Myrta DeMarco of Indian Wells.

About 1 to 2 inches of snow fell on Wednesday at the tram’s Mountain Station. Tram officials say Oct. 9 is early for snow, but not the earliest.

Some years back the first snow came on Oct. 1, said Lena Smith, tram spokeswoman.
“It’s early for us,” Smith said of Wednesday’s snowfall. “But not the earliest.”
