Those attending the D23 Expo in Japan this weekend got a real treat — a sneak look at the new Avatar attraction planned for Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom.

Guests of the Avatar-themed land will discover what it feels like to soar into the sky riding a Banshee, encounter floating mountains and wander through a nighttime jungle of bioluminescent plants that are alive with light and sound.

The new Avatar-themed land will be situated between Africa and the Oasis and will encompass and expand beyond the area currently known as Camp Minnie-Mickey. The Festival of the Lion King is moving its tribal celebration to an all-new theater in the Africa section of the park.

The attraction, set to open in 2017, is based on James Cameron’s blockbuster movie of the same name.

It’s the first time any renderings of the attraction have been shown since the project was announced two years ago. It’s also the first time that D23, the “official” Disney fan club, has held an expo in Japan. The three-day D23 Expos are held every two years in Anaheim, with the most recent held in August.

The new Avatar-inspired land isn’t the only change planned for Animal Kingdom, which opened in 1998. As part of the largest expansion in the history of the park, Disney is adding all-new entertainment experiences, including a new nighttime spectacular where live music, floating lanterns, water screens and swirling animal imagery that all combine to bring a show to Discovery River, according to an update from the Japan expo at d23.com.

Halloween treats, crafts Disney style

If you’re thinking of throwing a Halloween party, Disney has some pretty cool ideas for decorations and treats that make even me want to host a party — well, almost.

The website at http://blogs.disney.com/insider/recipes/2013/10/07/our-favorite-halloween-treats-and-crafts/ offers 20 different decoration ideas that include pirate-themed grab bags, Jack Skellington string garland, Vampire Mickey candy box and more, along with step by step instructions for creating them.

Treats include cupcakes, cookies and the all important “edible eyeballs.”

There are also costume ideas and Disney-themed patterns for pumpkin carving that include scary villains to Mary Poppins.
