Palm Springs author Richard Alther knows a thing or two about living and competing in sports as a gay man. He’s a champion swimmer who began competing in his 40s. You may recall he was a part of Desert Outlook’s March cover story on the changing world of sports for LGBT athletes.

Alther shares his experience and perspective in an open letter to President Vladimir Putin of Russia. That country has seen a recent rise in violence against and oppression of its LGBT citizens, sparking protests in the U.S. and other countries.  He appeals to Putin as an avid sportsman, whose country will host the 2014 Winter Olympics, to consider that some of the competitors undoubtedly will be gay men and women, as LGBT people have long been a part of the Olympics and every fabric of life.
