“With great beauty comes great power.”
It’s a quote you might expect to hear during a retrospective on legendary models or actresses, famous women whose careers and lives were shaped in large part by their gorgeousness. Instead, the line appears in “Gorgeous,” a coffee table book featuring female impersonators and other LGBT artists and entertainers.
With this book, photographer Rob Lebow is shattering ideas about beauty and gender, presenting larger-than-life, stunning performers in drag (at their most powerful) and out. They’re revealed as vulnerable and smart individuals, who are often as beautiful when the costumes and makeup come off. The featured subjects include Tammy Brown, Candis Cayne, Jimmy James and many more.
The book is slated for a spring-summer 2014 publication. A Kickstarter campaign was recently launched to help complete the project, raising funds to pay for studio space, lighting, a hair and makeup crew — all the things needed to make The Gorgeous Project a reality. A portion of the proceeds from book sales will benefit LGBT youth organizations, Lebow says.
