A portion of Interstate 10 is being dedicated to a California Highway Patrol officer who was killed in the line of duty 44 years ago.
The three-mile stretch between Malki Road and Main Street is being designated as the “CHP Officer Ambers O. ‘Sonny’ Shewmaker Memorial Highway.”
A highway dedication ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday in Beaumont at 550 E. Sixth St.
He had stopped a speeding vehicle shortly after its driver participated in an armed robbery.
Shewmaker was shot and died from his injuries the next day, according to the CHP.
He is the only officer to be killed in the line of duty while assigned to the area within the San Gorgonio Pass.
