Massachusetts Marine killed Monday in Afghanistan

A Marine from Massachusetts was killed Monday in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Tuesday afternoon.

Sgt. Daniel M. Vasselian, 27, was killed in combat operations in Helmand province, the DoD said.

Vasselian was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom with his unit, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment. The 2nd Marine Division unit is based at Camp Lejune in North Carolina.

The latest casualty statistics report issued by the DoD, issued at 10 a.m. EDT Monday, lists the total number of U.S. military deaths in Afghanistan at 2,161. The release lists the total number of Americans killed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, either in Afghanistan or other locations, at 2,298.

It is unclear if Vasselian is included in the latest report.
