A handful of stop signs have suddenly popped up at a Palm Springs intersection, depriving north- and southbound drivers of a speedy dash.
They now must come to a complete stop on El Cielo Road at the intersection of Mesquite Boulevard.
“It interrupts the flow, for sure,” said Palm Springs resident Mike Herbert, 34. “I doubt many people are happy about having to stop after not having to for so long. I know I’m not.”
Until recently, the only stop sign was on eastbound Mesquite. That made it difficult for drivers to turn south, since cross traffic was allowed to zoom past without stopping.
But according to Palm Springs police Traffic Sgt. Paul Abshire, the city engineering department decided to add stop signs to the other directions.
And now, there are temporary signs along with flashing red lights in the north- and southbound lanes.
Public works officials haven’t yet returned calls to The Desert Sun with details on why the signs were installed.
