Certified Farmers’ Markets to celebrate real food

Starting in February, it’s all about real, good food.

The Palm Springs Cultural Center and it’s Certified Farmers’ Markets are celebrating Real Food Week, kicking off on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Starting at the farmers’ market in Palm Desert, cookbook authors Joanne Neft and Laura Kenny will be sharing their knowledge of healthy cooking and doing demonstrations using produce from that day’s market. Known for their cookbooks “Placer County Real Food” and “The Art of Real Food,” the authors are passionate about locally-grown seasonal ingredients that so often make it into their recipes.

They will also be visiting the market in Palm Springs on the following Saturday and then La Quinta’s market on Sunday.

On Friday night, ShareKitchen will be hosting a dinner with foods sourced for local farmers and prepared by area chefs. The dinner is part of the ongoing mission of the event to spread the word of farm-to-fork. Before their weekend market appearances, both Neft and Kenny will be present. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at all Cerftified Farmers’ Markets locations.

Other activities include a screening of the film “More Than Honey,” a movie looking at the worldwide depletion of the bee population. The movie will be screened at the Camelot Theaters in Palm Springs, part of the “Palm Springs 2014 Sustainable Saturday Free Film Series.” Neft will provide an introduction to the film.
