Riverside County Registrar Kari Verjil to retire

January 30th, 2014 | by Erica Felci | Comments

Riverside County Registrar of Voters Kari Verjil confirmed her retirement plans to The Desert Sun Thursday.

Kari VerjilVerjil, the county’s top election official since 2011, will leave the county in mid-March.

Verjil spent much of her 23-year career in Riverside County, but did spend some time as the registrar in San Bernardino.

Verjil replaced fired registrar Barbara Dunmore, whose office drew the ire of Republicans and Democrats for how slow the election ballots were processed. Verjil has been widely credited for providing more transparency and efficiency to the county elections.

“One of my top priorities was improving communication and helping the election process continue to achieve the goal of getting the ballots out as quickly as possible,” Verjil told The Desert Sun Thursday. “I’ve enjoyed serving the voters of Riverside County.”

The county registrar serves at the discretion of the county executive officer, so hiring her replacement will not require any action by the board of supervisors.

She is the second county department head to announce their exit plans: Earlier Thursday, Assessor Larry Ward announced he would not seek re-election.
