A new bar in an old location is coming to Arenas Road in Palm Springs.
The downtown block of gay bars and smattering of shops will get a new neighbor in the location where the Rainbow Bar and Grill used to operate.
The new bar — at this point known as Chill, though that could change — will probably open in about three months, said Mike Cullen, the bar’s owner. The project received approval Wednesday with the Palm Springs Planning Commission, which added the one condition that bar provide some type of snack food.
“If it’s something like popcorn, simple snacks, chips, I’m OK with that,” said Cullen.
J.R. Roberts, a member of the planning commission, was less concerned about carbing-up. Instead, he wanted to see the overall appearance of the building improved.
“I have every intention to do landscaping, within reason and what’s permitted, to improve that area,” said Cullen. “That’s something that with or without the commission’s requirement, I plan to do.”
Cullen added, he’d like to explore the idea of installing movable window panels to make the building feel more open and airy, “very similar to LuLu’s where I can slide these panels open,” he noted. “It’s definitely my desire, to open the place up, make it a little brighter, and just make that corner a little better. And I’m hoping that will attract a lot more people to the business.”
